JANUARY - MYLES PURCHASE MAXPREPS COLORADO FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Following back-to-back State Championships with the Cherry Creek football team senior Myles Purchase, now playing college ball at Iowa State, was names the best player in Colorado by Maxpreps. A fitting end to his career for the Bruins in a season many thought was worthy of Gatorade Player of the Year honors.
FEBURARY - CHERRY CREEK BOYS BASKETBALL VS OVERLAND
In a shortened season for the basketball program which was limited to playing only teams within the Centennial League, every matchup was an important one. Myles Purchase and Julian Hammond led all scorers in the matchup against Overland, with 20 and 19 points, respectively.
MARCH - BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS BEGIN
The month of March is always associated with the word madness because you never know what can happen when tournament time comes around for the basketball programs. It was the beginning of the road for what many hoped would be a championship run for the boys, while the girls had the chance to be potential spoilers against one of the top teams in the state.
APRIL - PARKER WOLFE NAMED GATORADE NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE YEAR
Being the best at something at a particular school is hard, being the best in a particular state is even harder, but being the best in the entire country is something only a very select few can ever say they've accomplished. In April, Parker Wolfe became the very first Cherry Creek athlete to ever win a Gatorade Player of the Year award on the national level. The now North Carolina runner and ACC Freshman of the Year had a remarkable end to his career at Cherry Creek. Parker Wolfe is simply one of the best to ever do it.
MAY - MARC JOHNSON BECOMES COLORADO'S ALL-TIME WINNINGEST BASEBALL COACH
In 1973, legendary Cherry Creek Baseball coach Marc Johnson began his career for the Bruins and earned his 1st win. Fast forward 49 seasons, and Coach Johnson became the winningest coach in Colorado history when the Bruins beat Grandview in walk-off fashion on May 12th. Coach Johnson will live on in history forever. As of 2021, he has won 8 State Baseball titles, was named the National Coach of the Decade during the 1990s when Cherry Creek won 5 State Championships in a row from 1995-99, and now has over 808 wins. What many don't know about Johnson is the 5 Soccer State Championships he led the Bruins to in the 1970s.
JUNE - CCSN WINS MID-AMERICA REGIONAL STUDENT PRODUCTION AWARD
2020 was a year most won't ever forget. Due to attendance restrictions at football games during the fall of 2020, CCSN had an increased responsibility of producing high-quality and reliable broadcasts for fans to watch at home.
Almost 7 months after the semifinal broadcast against Pomona aired, CCSN was awarded a Student Production Award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America Chapter. Later in 2021, the same broadcast would win the same award on the National level.
CCSN became the first known student group in Colorado to win a National Student Production Award.
JULY - CHERRY CREEK BOYS SWIM AND DIVE WINS 12TH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
After winning their 11th title as a program in 2020, the boys swim team did it again in 2021 to win their 12th. As Cherry Creek pulled away to win the team title on June 24th, the team also set records in the 200 medley relay (1:28.61) and 200 freestyle relay (1:22.05). The Bruins finished with 530 total points finishing 129.5 points ahead of runner-up Regis Jesuit.
Although they won the title in June, this tweet was the most interacted with in July.
AUGUST - ERIC CRAVEN RETIRES AS GIRLS SWIM AND DIVE COACH AFTER 30 SEASONS
In August, another legendary Cherry Creek Coach, Eric Craven who led the first swim program for 30-years, announced his retirement. During his remarkable tenure, he won 28 Centennial League Championships, 14 State Championships, and was named National Coach of the Year by the NFHS on two occasions.
Craven finished leading the Bruins by going out on top, winning the 2021 State Championship.
SEPTEMBER - CHERRY CREEK FOOTBALL DEFEATS POMONA 31-0 IN HOME OPENER
After a year with a virtually empty Stutler Bowl, fans returned to Cherry Creek football games on September 3rd against Pomona. The Bruins came ready to play as the two time defending State Champions and new addition to the team, wide receiver Ismael Cisse, made an immediate impact.
He spoke to our Raegan Knobbe for both of their first ever interviews on CCSN.
OCTOBER - HOMECOMING FOOTBALL GAME
Homecoming is always a big deal at Cherry Creek as the football game is more of a community event than a competition. Cherry Creek alumni join the current students to back the stands for an experience like none other.
It was a great game against the Grandview Wolves, coached by former Cherry Creek defensive coordinator and dean Tom Doherty. It came all the way down to the wire, but ultimately the Bruins came out with the homecoming victory, 21-13.
NOVEMBER - THANKSGIVING DAY FOOTBALL PRACTICE
Only four football teams in each classification get the honor of practicing on Thanksgiving day, because it means that they are still fighting for a State Championship Title.
For the last four years, Cherry Creek players have had the honor, and our Ben Parris joined them for Turkey Day practice ahead of their semifinal game against Legend.
DECEMBER - CHERRY CREEK FOOTBALL WINS 3RD CONSECUTIVE CHAMPIONSHIP
2021 ended similarly to how 2019 and 2020 did; Cherry Creek football winning the state championship.
After shutting out Valor Christian, 21-0, for the second consecutive year, Raegan Knobbe spoke with Blake Purchase on the field at Empower Field at Mile High.
